How much does Underfloor Heating cost to run?
This is another question that we get asked time and time again, and unfortunately, like so many commonly asked questions, the answer isn’t all that straightforward. In fact, the answer is really, that it depends.
We know that an answer like this isn’t what you are after though, so we have drilled down into the running costs of Underfloor Heating and looked into:
- What drives costs up
- What drives costs down
- Running cost examples
If you wanted to cut to the chase you can view the running cost calculator on the Termogroup website. Find the link at the bottom of this article.
What drives costs up?
Heating costs can rise due to several common factors, but making simple adjustments can help you save money while staying cosy!
Firstly, one of the main drivers is the heating time. The longer your system runs, the more it will cost. Instead of leaving your heating on continuously, schedule it to operate only when needed. This not only keeps your space comfortable but also helps control your bills.
Another significant factor is insulation. If your home isn’t properly insulated, heat will escape, making your heating system work harder. Adding insulation can dramatically reduce running costs while maintaining warmth. Remember, this applies not just to floors but also to walls and windows!
Your set temperature also plays a crucial role. Ideally, aim for a comfortable range of 22-24 degrees Celsius. Running your heating higher can lead to increased costs as the system struggles to maintain those temperatures.
Lastly, consider the size of the area you’re heating. Larger spaces naturally require more energy. To manage this, think about zoning your heating system to target only occupied areas—this approach allows you to save energy in less-used spaces.
By being mindful of these factors, you can enjoy a cosy home and significantly lower your heating costs!

Running Cost Examples
There are several different electric underfloor heating systems, from mats to loose wire to foil systems. The fact is that the different systems don’t make a lot of difference to the costs, if you are lifting the floor temperature from 16° to 22° each system will be drawing roughly the same amount of electricity.
A standard 3m2 bathroom with a 200w system installed below the screed will be drawing 600watts when heating. Based on an electricity tariff of 35c/kWh it will cost 5c per square meter to run, or effectively 15c for that bathroom per hour.
