Hardwood Decking

Australian hardwood decks are strong and beautiful. And, all of our Australian hardwoods are sourced from certified native forests and are a sustainable alternative to rainforest sourced timbers.

Australian hardwoods are available in a range of colours and sizes. We’ve listed the 3 most popular timber species that are popular with decks for entertaining areas.

Of course, it goes without saying, the beauty of natural timbers is that every piece is unique in colour and grain texture.

Types of hardwoods

Blackbutt

As a class one timber with fantastic durability, Blackbutt is a great all-rounder and structural timber option. It’s easy to machine, takes on fixing and grows quickly in plantations, meaning regeneration is easy, so it’s a reasonably sustainable choice. Blackbutt really responds well to stains and finishes

Spotted Gum

Incredibly strong and known for its versatility, Spotted Gum is a favourite for its structural and architectural applications. Boasting a hardness rating of 1 (scale 1-6) and with class 1 durability, you can use Spotted Gum with confidence for claddings, flooring, joinery, decking, fencing, furniture – even on boats, sporting goods and tools, such as axes.

Spotted Gum offers a variety of colours from light brown to dark red with interesting grain patterns. Because it has a lower tannin content than other natives, Spotted Gum won’t “bleed” as much, making it ideal for coating and finishing.

Merbau

Very popular, imported hardwood native to South East Asia. Merbau has an orange-brown colour when freshly cut, which ages to a darker reddish-brown.

Merbau is reportedly a very durable timber. With regular maintenance, it is resistant to both rot and insect attacks. The Timber is easy to glue and accepts timber coatings well.

A very popular all-round decking timber and looks fantastic around pools and outdoor entertaining areas.

Softwood Decking

Australian pine is one of the most versatile timbers used in construction today.

Much of the pine used in Australia is sourced from plantation-grown forests in Australia and New Zealand, however pine is commonly grown throughout the world. Pines versatility as well as it’s fast growth make it one of the most popular and sustainable building materials available.

Pine is a relatively soft wood. To make it more durable, it is generally kiln dried and treated with preservatives, which can lengthen it’s useful life. Furthermore, it won’t move or bow as it dries. Preservatives also protect it against decay, insects and other wood-destroying organisms.

Pine - treated

It is a widely held misconception that the grooves provide a “non slip” surface for use in wet areas. This is not the case! In fact, the reason decking has grooves machined into it is to reduce surface contact between the decking itself and the joist, thus preventing water from being held between the two surfaces and preventing premature decay. On this basis, we recommend you install your decking plain side up. However, ultimately, the choice is yours!

COMPOSITE DECKING RANGE

What are composite decks

THE HASSLE-FREE ALTERNATIVE TO TIMBER DECKING

Composite decking materials are a man-made solution to traditional timber decking boards.

Composite boards are made from more than one material fused together. This combines the strengths of each material, making a stronger more durable product than the original.

The boards are then dressed with a pattern and colour that resembles the look of finished timber.

The range of finishes and colours vary from brand to brand. Talk to the decking specialists at your local Hardware & General store. They’ll help you create the deck of your dreams.
